There are 6 universities in Emilia-Romagna, with over 400 courses, 153 masters, 126 specialization courses, 113 Ph.D. and 150 thousand enrolled students in the 2015/16 academic year. About 70 million euro each year are allocated for the right to education.

The regional universities are: University of Bologna (among the oldest of the western world), University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, University of Ferrara, University of Parma, Cattolica University of Piacenza, the seat in Piacenza of the ‘Politecnico di Milano’, and besides, the American Johns Hopkins University.

A new educational infrastructure, “Education and Research Emilia-Romagna”, fosters integration among 545 schools, over 150 accredited training providers, universities, research organizations and economic system. The infrastructure is supported by an investment of 120 million euro each year, and is divided in four sections:

  • Education and vocational training, to achieve a vocational qualification/diploma with job-oriented three-year courses.
  • Polytechnic network, aimed at qualifying the technical and scientific skills of the people. It includes 7 Higher Technical Institutes (HTI), new technology schools that organize 2-year post-diploma courses to train top technicians in the following strategic sectors of the regional manufacturing system: sustainable mobility; agro-food; mechanical engineering, mechatronic, automotive and packaging; new health technologies; territory, energy, construction; tourism and wellbeing.

  • Higher education and research: specialized training, research grants, Ph.D. grants and actions to support creation and growth of new innovative companies.
  • Employment and skills: actions to support companies’ projects for innovation, digitalization, internationalization and sustainability and to support people in the transition from training to labour market or from two different jobs and to update the workers’ skills.
