Healthcare system

  • There are 55 public hospitals in Emilia-Romagna. The hospital beds are about 18 thousand, 72% of which in public hospitals, with 3.9 places per 1,000 inhabitants (Siseps 2018).
  • Availability of ICT health care services include: electronic health records, reservations, payments, etc.
  • The public regional healthcare system has a very good reputation at national and international level. Emilia-Romagna ranks first in Italy and third in Europe for the quality of its health services, after Holland and Switzerland (Source: Fond. Economica Rosselli, 2014).

iCity and Digital Infrastructures

Emilia-Romagna is the first Italian region according to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) elaborated by Ernst&Young in 2016.
According to the Smart City Index 2016 and the iCity Rating 2017, Bologna is a top smart city and all main regional towns rank among the top 30 at national level, out of more than 100 Italian towns and cities. These two indexes consider such indicators as the economy, governance, broadband coverage, mobility, innovation, quality of life, green economy, etc.

High quality food production

Emilia-Romagna is the region with the highest number of PDO and PGI products in Europe. There are 44 PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) certified products, such as: Parmigiano Reggiano – Parmesan cheese, Prosciutto di Parma – Parma ham, Aceto balsamico di Modena – Balsamic vinegar from Modena, etc.

Emilia-Romagna has been named Lonely Planet's number one destination to visit in Europe in 2018.



The huge and diversified cultural and natural heritage of Emilia Romagna positions the region among the national and international leaders of excellence, including:

  • five well-known UNESCO sites (Modena, Ravenna, Ferrara, Delta del Po, Appennino Tosco-Emiliano),
  • 170 major and minor centres of high cultural value,
  • 500 museums, artistic collections and historical sites,
  • network of natural parks (2 national parks, 1 interregional park, 14 regional parks and 14 nature reserves) and wide offer of trekking paths ( )
  • 139 sites of community Importance,
  • 87 Special Protection Areas and 14% of the regional territory covered by the European Nature 2000 network.

Cultural and natural heritage

This all demonstrates the outstanding wealth of the region and the huge potential for further development. Bologna was European Capital of Culture in 2000 and UNESCO City of Music in 2006. Parma is a candidate as European Cultural Capital in 2020.

Better life index (OECD)

Emilia-Romagna shows good performances according to the Better Life Index (BLI) - OECD 2015. In several topics of the index – Income, Jobs, Civic Engagement, Health, Safety – the region ranks at the top positions compared to Italian regions. Emilia-Romagna is very well positioned at national level also for other topics considered by the index, such as: Access to services (2/21 regions in Italy), Housing (5/21), Education (7/21).
