Emilia-Romagna ranks first in Italy and 21st in the overall ranking according to the new 2023 edition of the Transatlantic Subnational Innovation Competitiveness Index 2.0. The study has been prepared by various research centers and includes 121 states, provinces and subnational regions of Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the United States.
To develop the index, 13 indicators have been taken into account grouped into 3 thematic areas: workforce skills, globalisation and innovation capacity. With regard to the first thematic area, indicators refer to the level of education of the workforce, the share of foreigners among knowledge workers, employment in professional, technical and scientific activities and the productivity of the manufacturing sector. As concerns the issue of globalization, the indicators analysed refer to exports of high-tech products and inward foreign direct investment. Innovative capacity is measured through several indicators that include expenditure and employees in research and development, patent production, venture capital investments, etc.
In the three thematic areas, Emilia-Romagna shows a better relative position in terms of globalization and innovation capacity (21st position in both clusters).
