German-Italian Energy Forum 2023 - July 6 at Frankfurt

The Emilia-Romagna region focuses on green hydrogen and will attend the Forum at the IHK in Frankfurt am Main on 6 July to present its projects and start new partnerships. Other Italian regions will also participate in the event that will be an important opportunity to deepen the possibilities of collaboration both between the regions involved and between Italy and Germany.

Green hydrogen (hydrogen produced from renewable sources) is able to play a strategic role in the decarbonisation of sectors that are starting to adopt a sustainable growth model.  In this context, the Emilia-Romagna strategy - defined and shared through the Pact for Work and Climate signed in 2020 by 55 stakeholders - passes through the strengthening of investments in green hydrogen, which aim to limit the environmental impact of production chains, in particular in the energy-intensive "hard to abate" sectors.

The strong political commitment is confirmed at international level: Emilia-Romagna is in fact one of the few regions in Europe to have joined Hydrogen Europe, a European association that together with the European Commission governs the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, a public-private partnership that finances research and innovation activities for hydrogen in Europe.

In Italy, several regions have launched projects for the production of green hydrogen also linked to offshore renewable energy plants. Among the most significant cases there is the Agnes project in Emilia-Romagna. The region also closed specific calls for investments in the redevelopment of dismissed industrial sites with the creation of plants for the production of green hydrogen. The goal is to make the local industry and logistics increasingly sustainable. The new plants will develop a capacity between 1 and 10 megawatts; the Emilia-Romagna region has prepared an initial loan of 19.5 million euros.

As stated by the Regional Councillor for Economic Development and Green Economy, Vincenzo Colla: "The Region firmly believes that hydrogen can play a key role as a clean energy of the future. This is why we are ready to support large-scale production activities, able to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of electrolysis for the energy-intensive industry, logistics and local transport".
